Cities: Tribute to Kyoto

Our latest addition to the “Cities” collection is the "Tribute to Kyoto" timepiece. Magana continues its journey of intertwining history with the present time, paying homage to thousand-year-old cities. 

Kyoto, once the imperial capital of Japan, holds a rich history and cultural significance. We delve into a fascinating past to create an accurate tribute: Kyoto, formerly known as Heian-kyō, was established as Japan's capital in 794 AD by Emperor Kanmu. It served as the center of political, cultural, and religious life for over a millennium until the capital was moved to Tokyo in 1868 during the Meiji Restoration.

During its long history, Kyoto witnessed the rise and fall of numerous dynasties, including the Heian, Kamakura, Muromachi, and Edo periods. Each era left its mark on the city, contributing to its architectural heritage, artistic traditions, and spiritual practices.

Kyoto's cultural legacy extends to its traditional arts, such as tea ceremony, ikebana (flower arranging), and kabuki theater. The city is also famous for its historic districts like Gion, known for its preserved wooden machiya townhouses and as the center of the geisha culture.

Despite modernization and urban development, Kyoto has preserved its historical charm through meticulous conservation efforts. Many of its ancient temples, shrines, and gardens are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, attracting millions of visitors each year.
